Located in the parish of Santa Maria Maior (Castelo), the Castelo de São Jorge stands on the highest hill in the Historic Centre, providing its visitors with one of the most beautiful views over the city. Here you can explore the archaeological remains, stroll through the gardens and take part in guided tours.
One of the crowning jewels of the city of Lisbon, the Torre de Belém is an architectural icon from the reign of King Manuel I, which served as a fortress to defend the river entrance of the port of Lisbon. It has been classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO and has been elected as one of the seven Wonders of Portugal.
The Praça do Rossio (Rossio Square) is one of the city’s busiest squares. Considered to be the heart of Lisbon, the Praça do Rossio is composed of old pombaline-style buildings, shops, cafés and the famous Estação do Rossio (Rossio Station), one of the world’s most beautiful train stations. Here you will feel like a native of Lisbon.
Considered the “best aquarium in the world” by TripAdvisor, the Lisbon Oceanarium has a large central aquarium and four marine habitats. During your visit, you can see birds, invertebrates, fish, amphibians, mammals and plants. The equipment is located in Parque das Nações, the most modern area in the city.
Along the narrow streets of the oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon you can find fado houses, typical restaurants and popular festivities, especially in June. Visit the Chafariz del Rei palace, the National Pantheon, São Vicente Church and Santo Estevão viewpoint, with its spectacular views over the city.
One of the most enjoyable ways of getting to know the city is through its tram network. Whether on the modern number 15, linking the historical centre with the monumental area of Belém; or on the older number 28, going from the traditional Graça area to Campo de Ourique, through Castelo and Sé de Lisboa.
Traditional cuisine lovers must try grilled sardines, cod à la Brás, barbecue-grilled dishes and convent sweets, of which the pastel de Belém (custard tart) is the best example. The city features renowned signature cuisine, with some of the top restaurants in the world.
